Opinion:Free ice cream and more chicken biscuits

Students should be appreciated!!!

At Carter High School we have chicken biscuits only on Fridays and I believe that we should have these more often. They sell chicken biscuits on Fridays to support our sports teams. The school wants us to have a nice breakfast every morning with nutrition, and I believe that this is the only food that will give us the most nutrition out of every breakfast they give us. I also believe that having free ice cream would be a nice thing for us during lunch. Having free ice cream is an advantage so this ice cream would not be everyday but at least once or twice a week. There are kids at this school that deserve some type of good treatment so I believe that free ice cream would be a reward for the good kids. I am a senior that is not a morning person but when we have chicken biscuits it gets me ready for the day

School food has never been the best but having these biscuits actually make me wanna eat food in the mornings. Every child should be able to have something they like in the mornings to eat especially if they have school they need something to energize them. High school students and staff are totally different people and prefer different things but I believe everyone here deserves a voice for themselves and should get what they all deserve. Majority of the students here listen to the teachers, work hard, and  they definitely deserve these chicken biscuits and free ice cream. I definitely believe that if this ever does happen this school would have less kids sleeping and they would have better days.

Opinion: Carter High Should Legalize Capital Punishment

Painting depicting the death penalty via the electric chair.

How many crimes would you believe it would take until criminals are caught and punished for their crimes against true justice? It is time the violators of divine rights face consequences for their sinful actions against humanity. The solution of punishing the foul guilty; Capital punishment is the only true end for scum of the earth. For too long Carter High School has faced multiple cases of criminals not confessing and answering to their crimes.  Carter high school should have capital punishment legalized.

By having capital punishment become legalized, we can properly execute criminals for their foul and evil crimes against this pure school. This could solve a multitude of issues, such as the recent vandalism issues that have been occurring at this pure and innocent establishment students and teachers dwell in. The death penalty is the most effective method in purging the wrong and restoring order to all things beautiful. This new rule will give forth a new method of stopping chaos; fear. By scaring those who break rules, students and teachers alike, it will encourage all to obey before the might of the law.

If this new law is added a new true order can be achieved within the school. The teachers and staff can effectively add an execution class to the curriculum, creating many executioners needed to purge this place of the foul stench that plagues what we hold dear. We can have a plentiful amount of executioners and set a proper example to establish proper and unbreakable rules. The executions could be held in the courtyard for a public execution to set an example on what happens with disobedience. With these executions none shall dare misbehave again, lest they want to face an inevitable fate.

Public display where teachers and students alike will be executed.

Within Carter High School there are two things to consider, who executes and what makes someone applicable for this punishment. For those who commit murder shall face murder, if someone is two minutes late in turning in their library book; instant death. If someone forgets to flush they will recieve immediate execution. The executioners will be students trained for this role. With all these new rules Carter will be safer than ever. With this all in mind none shall dare violate these rules with this new world order put into action.

Once executioners are properly trained with a new available execution class, rules will be enforced properly. While the death penalty may be a solution to some, others may find it immoral. Students and teachers may fear that the punishment will be used for the sake of corruption, and to some extent they have every right to worry. Some may worry it would bring injustice, but the penalty will be nothing but an act of justice. To all who fear, the death penalty awaits you all. Maybe with the blood of the fallen students and teachers, the school can use it within a ritual to make a functioning ice cream machine.

Opinion: Are we doing enough to stop bullying at Carter High School?

Bullying has been an issue for far too long at Carter High School, and something needs to be done to stop, or at least alleviate, the problem. Students have been harassed, both verbally and physically, many times with no help from the administrators. Ignoring the problems another person receives due to bullying when the evidence is in plain sight is never okay. We really need to start paying more attention to bullying, because it can affect the victim’s psychology through adulthood, the consequences of bullying could be dire if a situation is left untouched, and the victim/victims aren’t always able to help themselves. Before we talk about anything else, let’s look into the psychological problems that bullying causes. Bullying is described as wanting to seek to harm, intimidate, or coerce (someone perceived as vulnerable). According to David McNamee, the author of an article titled, “What are the adult health consequences of childhood bullying?” on medicalnewstoday.com, childhood bullying can lead to some complex problems for that person as an adult. “A 2014 study from researchers at King’s College London in the UK found that the negative social, physical and mental health effects of childhood bullying are still evident up to 40 years later,” McNamee states. Aside from long-term problems, if an individual gets bullied bad enough, it could possibly lead to the suicide of that particular person. In a CDC presentation titled, “The Relationship Between Bullying and Suicide: What We Know and What it Means for Schools,” the author states, “Youth who report being frequently bullied by others are at increased risk of suicide-related behaviors, and negative physical and mental outcomes.” The value of a person’s life is precious, and if a person reports bullying, or if an administrator witnesses it, and the people in charge don’t take action against it, then that person could possibly be at risk of attempting suicide. Seattle Galloway, a CHS freshman, has seen bullying first hand over a long course of time; the administrators did nothing. “There was this kid three years ago. His name was Bryant, and people came up with this thing called the ‘Bryan touch,’ and if you touched Bryant it was, really, really bad,” she says. When asked if she thought the admins were good at helping the bullied, she said, “They could suspend them, but half of the time they don’t really do anything. My sister is currently being bullied, and I don’t think they’ll do anything about it.” That being said, this brings us to our last point: students aren’t always able to stop bullying themselves. Some people will tell you to just “ignore” the bullies or try to resolve the problem by talking it out. However, the bullies are not always willing to negotiate and will continue their actions; this can happen when ignoring the bullies, too. Since students cannot possibly get away from this at school, they might need a third party involved to stop it. This could include talking to the bullies’ parents, taking protective measures to guard victimized students, or even talking to the bullies themselves. Administrators need to look at bullying situations as more than a small problem, and look deep into the situations to find the best solution.

Opinion: Students Should Not Receive Silent Lunch for Being Tardy

Have you ever been late to school? If so, then you must be well aware of the consequences: silent lunch. When someone is late to school, they must go to the office, and they are given a silent lunch slip. Their name also goes on a list, so the principals know who has silent lunch. Failure to serve silent lunch results in RLC. Students get 1 parent note per year, in case there is an emergency, but that’s it. I do not think this is the appropriate way to punish students for being late. Students have reasons for coming in late, and they have things going on in their lives other than school. A good example of this is car trouble. If a student’s car breaks down, they are given a silent lunch for something that is not their fault. Another reason silent lunch for tardiness should be taken away is the punishment itself. Silent lunch does not help students in any way. They cannot sit with their friends, talk, or be on their phones. This punishment benefits no one, and it does nothing to sit a teenager at a desk against the wall for 30 minutes. On the other hand, some may argue that it teaches students responsibility, and prepares them for the real world by displaying that you are punished for your actions, and you have to deal with the consequences. However, if someone is late just once for a good reason, such as their car not starting, then they still must serve a silent lunch for being tardy. Some students have even stated that if they oversleep, they just do not attend school, to avoid silent lunch. It is better that a student comes to school late, rather than not coming at all. Many students agree that this rule should not be enforced, because silent lunch is not the way to handle the situation.

Opinion: The Devious Licks Trend is childish/foolish and should stop

Do you think the bathrooms will ever be unlocked with the devious licks trend going on? Maybe not if the Devious Licks trend continues. Devious licks trend is a trend where students vandalize, destroy, or steal property from the school, other students, or even staff members. This trend started on the social media app, TikTok, and is very destructive, the destruction mainly occurs in the bathrooms here at Carter High School, hence the bathrooms being locked.

This has become a very popular trend but is also a very annoying one to the teachers, staff members, and students who do not participate in the trend. Here at Carter, students participating in this trend have caused almost all of the bathrooms to be locked, and they are still causing more damage to the remaining bathrooms. The teachers and staff are very tired of the shenanigans, and they think it is ridiculous that destroying property that belongs to the school (and not the students) is entertaining to certain students and the people on Tik Tok encouraging it.

This trend should come to a stop for many reasons, but mainly because it is childish and foolish, it does not follow student code, and it is costing lots of money for many schools.

The trend is childish and foolish because little children break stuff for entertainment, not people who are almost adults. It is foolish to contribute to something that is destroying property that isn’t yours because if you’re caught then you could get into some serious trouble, and what is meant by serious trouble; could possibly be a charge for vandalism or destruction of property put on your record, which could most likely cost your future.

My second reason is that this trend does not follow school guidelines and student code. The students should respect school property because it does not belong to them but is provided for them by the school, and the taxes that their parents pay.

My third reason is that this trend is costing many schools all-around lots of money, money that could be used for many other things around the schools, like snacks for the students and vending machines.

Someone participating in this trend might say it is fun/funny and entertaining, but in response to that, this trend is not funny or enjoyable for many staff members and principals, and this trend could result in serious consequences.

In conclusion, I think this trend is very ridiculous and childish, and should come to an end before it costs the school too much money and causes the bathrooms to be locked for good.

Opinion: Combined Buses

An example of a combined bus

For a while there was a serious dilemma  at CHS: bus drivers were depleting and students were increasing! There was and still is a serious need for bus drivers with the shortage, the school concluded to combined buses. You may not think this is a very serious matter, but for students that ride the bus this is serious. Some buses have students sitting in the walkway of the bus which could cause serious risks! Not to mention it’s also uncomfortable, unsanitary, and most of all time consuming. There were students getting off their bus an hour late! Although this is cost effective for the school if the school had staff readily available the problems would be solved all together. There have been many bus incidents in the past with buses getting into accidents and people getting hurt even without the bus being crowded with students now being packed in buses like cattle the risks are even higher. For a point of view from a student from CHS Jaiden Arnwine described the bus as “A full and chaotic place difficult to find any seats.” The unsanitary conditions of overcrowded buses may be catastrophic, if Tennessee is hit with another rapid case of covid. With being crowded together you may not know if the person beside you has covid, or if they even care about much sanitation in general. This may put you in a very awkward situation if you do not want to sit by them because of the lack of seats. Discomfort is a primary issue because it puts students in uncertain conditions. You most likely will not know the person you’re sitting with, or have personal space. This could be worse for students with social anxiety or even claustrophobia. Even art students have dilemmas for their large projects they may need to sit by to prevent the risk of damage. Hence why the school should have more bus drivers readily available to prevent risks to students.

Student Parking At Carter High

Student Parking lot at Carter High

Students that drive themselves to school everyday and that need to park somewhere in the school are important but the school having a parking fee for students is insane. Especially them having to pay to park and it being so expensive is crazy and it being $35. I’ve talked to students around the school and asked what their opinion is on them having to pay $35 to buy a student parking pass to park in the student section, and they have said stuff like parking is really important and having to pay for it especially as a student and some of them might not have jobs and them might not have anywhere to park in the morning so they have to pay to park in the student section. Some people that i’ve also talked to about this problem say that the student parking is good and having to pay for it is a good thing because that’s another way for the school to make money but the money price is a little bit to high and they should lower it so that they can bring in more students to park and they will be making more money while also having a place for more students to park in the morning and throughout the day. Some more reasoning is that coming in the school in the morning and having to pay for a parking pass is not okay and that some students have things to do like after school activities and stuff like that but having to try to get student parking is just irrelevant and takes too much time to get a parking spot and have to get up to school in time to do there after and before school activities and just all around just go on with there day but having to pay for student parking could just make it worse on a student or something like that. In conclusion student parking should be either lowered in the money range or not be a thing at all because its making a big impact on some students.

Opinion; Wearing Hats Should be Allowed in School

A kid wearing a hat, I do not own rights to this photo.

Is there even a good reason for hats not to be worn in the school buildings? Apparently wearing hats is distracting for students to learn and grow. But is that really true, there is no proof stating that wearing hats affects students’ learning ability. Hats actually can boost a student’s confidence. It can fix a bad hair day and keep our heads warm on cold winter days. When students wear hats during the cold winter days they have to take their hats off and put them in their school bag. Which could mess up their hat, by bending it or getting a pencil or marker on their hat when it’s placed in their school bag. We should not get in trouble for wearing hats in school. Should it matter what a student wears on top of their head, it’s their right to wear hats if they wanna. If any students were to wear hats it would mainly be the boys and some girls. No evidence shows that wearing hats is a problem for students to pay attention in class or do their work. No one really knows the actual reason why hats should not be worn in school because there isn’t evidence to back up that claim. It’s never been investigated or looked at closely. All they can say is that hats are “distracting and affect students’ ability to learn,” but no evidence states that. Schools really need to look at what wearing hats can do to a student’s confidence. Hats can fix many things like a bad hair day, bad haircut, fashion statement.  Many good things can come from students wearing a hat.

Opinion: Pep Rallies in the Gym Are the Way To Go

School spirit is something that is important for the student body to stay involved in school and promote pride in their roots. When people are all excited and cheering for the same reason, they are more likely to be unified and have a commonality to all get along. Pep rallies are a great way to get the student body involved and to spread school spirit. The pep rallies at Carter High have been different from previous years, obviously following the protocols from the pandemic. They were cancelled all together last year, and have been in the morning before school this year, but there is talk about bringing them back during enrichment. The original pep rallies in the gym are by far the best and most effective for promoting school spirit and need to be brought back. Since getting back to somewhat normal, being brought together into one area physically would be refreshing to have a sense of familiarity. It just feels wrong to not be cramped up together in the gym during  a pep rally. Not only does it bring the student body physically closer, but it also raises excitement. The loud cheering hypes up both the players and the fans. This energy is important for game day and school spirit in general. Pep rallies are also a great reason to get out of class and do something emotionally productive compared to the academically grueling week everyone had. It is a great way to get excited for the weekend. Some might not like pep rallies because it can get stuffy, loud, and crowded, or they simply do not want to be there; however, the argument can be made that a lot of students do not want to be at school in general, yet they still show up. Pep rallies are supposed to be a fun break from the average school day, and they are an opportunity to let out some energy. Also, since everyone is required to show up for school, why not just accept that pep rallies are a part of school. Overall, pep rallies are intended to be fun and to promote school spirit, so why not let them do just that?

Opinion: New Ice Cream Machine, it’s Tasty, but is it Reliable?

Image preview
The new “Jeff’s Best” ice cream machine in the cafeteria lobby.

Picture this: summer has just ended; you’re in school, the heat of the August day still lingers in through the hallways. Now think: would this not be the perfect time for a nice cold treat? Well the brand new ice-cream machine at Carter High is perfect for solving the summer heat. People around the school have been very interested in this new addition. Many mention their excitement to try it, and others express intrigue about when this machine will get up and running (with most not knowing if it is working or not). I think the new ice cream machine is a fun, cool addition to the school; however, I can only imagine that the machine must require a lot of maintenance, and so I hope that it can remain available and reliable for the near future. I for one think this machine is a positive for the school because, lets face it, almost everybody likes ice cream; even some lactose-intolerant people still make some room for ice cream! And so in providing this for students, the school has also provided what I can only imagine will be a very popular, and very successful source of extra income. On the other hand however, my concerns about the upkeep of the machine are mainly rooted in the fact that almost all that I have asked have either been unsure if the machine was working, or stated that it wasn’t. And while this is understandable as it is only the beginning of its life here at Carter High, I understand that soft serve most likely provides a completely unique challenge from the normal vending machines. And while I may just lack understanding of the machine, I can only imagine that keeping the ice cream itself from going bad, as well as basic cleaning and maintenance will be a challenge. Moving back to the possibilities of the machine, it is quite obvious that students enjoy feeling independent with their purchases (ex. Chick-Fil-A Fridays, Krispy Kreme Wednesdays) so having this ice cream machine is just another way the school can indulge in that, while also making money in the meantime. And while some may feel further worry about the reliability of the machine, saying that if it doesn’t work it may just be taking up space, I believe that even just an occasional opportunity to purchase it would suffice, as we only have limited times for Chick-Fil-A biscuits and Krispy Kreme as well. Now, this ice cream machine has only just arrived, many things are still unsure about it’s upkeep, it’s success, and even it’s popularity, but I for one think it is a welcome addition to the school.
