Opinion: Vending Machines are Useful at Carter High School

the vending machine next to the cafeteria

Let’s say that you get to school in the morning and you are really hungry and think you have no hope but then you remember there are vending machines around the school. The vending machines are really good for some people with the money, but they should bring down the prices a little bit so more people that don’t have as much money can use the machines . The vending machines can make people use too much of people’s money and then the people who don’t make money will be out and only the people who get money will be able to buy stuff from them. If the vending machines were not so expensive then people would have more of their hard earned money to either spend or save the money that they worked hard for on the machines. Some of the machines are always sold out and that limits the options of stuff you can get from the machines. The school should add more vending machines around the school like the upstairs area that doesn’t have a machine. Some people might say the machines are fine the way they are and that’s ok because it’s a good feature to a school and that they need no new things. But they could use some upgrading to the machines like new ones or different concessions in them and they need stuff because some of the vending machines don’t have anything in a slot and it makes it look too empty. Having the vending machines are always good and are useful for the people of the school and just need a few new changes to them and that will make them really good and more useful.

Opinion: Students Should Use Lockers More

The lockers along the hallways

Along every hallway here at Carter High School lie vacant lockers waiting to be used. Every day students pass these lockers and do not think twice about them. But if the students took a minute to look at the pros of using lockers they would see that they should use them. Students all throughout the school talk about how useless the lockers are and how they are a “waste of space.” A plethora of students dislike the lockers; however, lockers are very useful. More students should use the lockers because it can make their bag lighter. Half of the useless stuff you might not need for every class just takes up room in your backpack that is not needed. It also adds weight onto your back as you walk through the hallways that is unnecessary. If students will put the non-needed school supplies in lockers, it would make wandering the halls more luxurious. Lockers are also useful to students who have things that they do not want to carry around with them all day. For example, if a student athlete has a change of clothes or a pair of shoes they need at some point throughout the day they can put it in their locker instead of carrying it around with them all day. Another example is if it is supposed to rain and someone brings a rain jacket; they can put it in the locker until they are ready to use it. Using lockers can also help students be more organized with their work. Instead of having all of their work crammed into their backpack they can keep it inside of their locker until it is due. Even though some may say that there is no time to use the lockers in between class change and still make it to class in time, students do not have to use their lockers after every class period. Students can just use the lockers whenever they want and see a need to. Henceforth, students should use lockers more often to improve their everyday school experience.

Background about art teacher

This is Ms. Adam’s looking nice in school.

Ms. Adam´s is one of the art teachers at Carter high school. She was always into art ever since she was a little girl. Her entire family has always been into the whole art theme such as fashion design, product designer, art history buff and many more.Everyone had something creative going on, be it drawing out plans and ideas or just art as a hobby. She was always creating, drawing, building and painting. She loved to read and play music, so her imagination and creativity was fanned from a very early age.One of Her earliest memories is around age 4 or 5, sitting at the coffee table in the family room and pouring through books her Nonna and Mom had just brought back from some museums on a trip they took.  She was in awe of the paintings, mostly French Impressionists and Post Impressionists. She said herself ¨My life was forever changed.¨Fast Forward to high school She went to New York and Italy with her High School honors and AP art classes

Her love for art was cemented forever after that. However, She didn’t see it as a career at the time. She enrolled in college at the University of South Carolina. She thought that she would work in some facet of international business, accounting, translations, just something that would allow her to travel.  However, life had other plans.  She was excelling in all of her courses but she was terribly bored. ¨no offence to my business friends and family¨ she had said and it just wasn’t for her. So, after class one day, she marched across campus and met with an advisor and said she wanted to be an art teacher.  She told her folks she switched her major and the rest, as they say, is history.  She got a bachelors in fine arts in Art Education. She always goes to museums and galleries whenever she is in a new place. She picks up books from her travels, marks them with the date and whom She was with, and keeps it for reference in her library.

She loves to read about art and artists. As far as the question of what is the downfall of art, there is none as long as you create for yourself.  The business side of art is a hustle.  You have to be okay with that.  You have to be able to produce and get yourself and your art to as many galleries as you can, work social media, and network.  This isn’t any different than being in sales of a product or insurance or something like that.  You just have to work hard and get your work out there.  No one is going to knock on your door and say “Hey, I heard a really awesome artist lives here.”  So get yourself out there.  Oh, and make art every day you can.  You get better and your ideas get better the more you create.

The color guard

the coach and jasmine with some of her teammates.

Today, the color guard practices are performed to music while the team members are wearing outfits that match their theme.I have been speaking to a former teammate of the color guard, Jasmine Garner. She has been in the color guard for a year now and has interesting information to tell us about everything her and her teammates do. Most people do not know exactly what the guard is so i have asked Jasmine if she could summarize it for me and she said ¨We are the flags at halftime, so people actually have something to keep them entertained during  halftime instead of just listening to music.¨ The guard has a 90×60 ft flag that they pull over the band and they even have an eighth and seventh grader in their high school team.

The guard practices on Mondays, has games on Fridays and competitions on Saturdays. This year the show is called Rise Up. It’s about a phoenix. There were seventeen members last year and there are eleven members this year. Ellie Wilson star is the coach of the color guard and the captain is Jason Degresso. They have practice during the third block and have three fourths of the halftime show done already.Last season there was a little bit of a change up and people were disappointed.I was told that last season there was supposed to be a show called the culprit, about a bandit and because of covid they could not perform it, since they were not going to many games.

In the Webb game he had 252 Total Passing Yards, .639 Comp Percentage, and 1 Total TD’s which isn’t bad at all. He also talked about the other players he was going against for player of the week;with they were really good players, “but he knew he would get the win and Player of the Week. He also got nominated for player of the week in week 3 after the big win against Gibbs on WBIR, a game in which he played really well, too.”

CHS Football Season So Far

This season has been good so far for the Carter Hornets. Winning all 3 of their games. Carter vs. Webb 26-21, Carter vs. Sevier co. 42-35, and then this last week they beat Gibbs 42-35. The boys have worked really hard for this.Carter High football player Kaiden Wilson says “We practice everyday/ and work our hardest”  They practice everyday, and their coaches put them in certain situations to prepare them for the games. The boys constantly have a good attitude, they hype eachother up and help each other to become better.Kaiden also said “working as a team is what helps us most.We take care of each other on and off the field.”  Their teamwork, good attitudes, and hard work is what has helped them these past few games. Congratulations to the Carter Hornets, let’s keep it up.

Diet and Nutrition definition from a Human Studies Teacher and a Wrestling team Student.

Veggies is a good source for nutrition.

Everyone has a different opinion on dieting and the nutrition that goes into our bodies. I’ve decided to interview Ms.wade and Kaleb Knight about nutrition and dieting.  Ms.Wade said there are two different social definitions for nutrition. She then said there are two types of meaning as a social meaning of nutrition for examples like FAB diets and keto diets. . A FAB diet is a fast-losing weight diet but it can be dangerous because you’re missing out on multiple nutrients that you need.  There are no really good or bad diets, for instant good diets have a tendency to be bad, says Ms.Wade. Everyone is different when it comes to weight loss because it depends on weight, height, age, and gender. Ms.Wade also said that she all wanted us to know that “The food that you put in your body as a teen will determine you as an adult/ as you get older.” Having a balanced diet is key for example, “eating a cookie is okay, but getting cookies every day is not so healthy nor balanced”.

Kabel knight is a sophomore on the wrestling team.

I asked the same set of questions to Kabel Knight who is a sophomore on the wrestling team. Kaleb said that in his opinion dieting is to “help maintain a balanced body style and being a healthier version of yourself,” And nutrition “gives us energy without feeling tired.” Ms.Wade and Kaleb both have the same idea for dieting and nutrition” it has to be balanced to be a healthier version should l have a balanced nutrition. And it will help you live longer plus having a better body type.”

What Ms. Wade’s 2021 Nutrition Class dose of this year.

One of me. Wades student working on her cutting skills.

This semester Ms. Wade is teaching a nutrient class or most students call it a “cooking class”. Students not only learn how to cook but the atmosphere as well as the science behind cooking. Also learning which foods are good and bad for the body. This class can not only help students cook for themselves but also their college credit. By taking the exam it will give a student three extra credits. Some colleges will call for a nutrition class like Ms. Wade is presenting.

One of Ms. Wades’ students in the third block, Josie Shipley, a junior at Carter High, says “it will help me in college.” and “A Lot of people enjoy the class.” Also there are a bunch of college opportunities that come from learning these skills. For example, Josie wants to be in the medical field and this class will help her in many ways like working as a team, learning to listen, and paying attention to her surroundings.

Mr. Orucevic Shares About His Background

Mr. Orucevic sits contentedly next to a sunny window.

Mr. Orucevic, a well-known Algebra 2 and Calculus teacher at Carter High School, was willing to share some information about his life in his home country with us. Mr. Orucevic grew up in Bosnia, a country located in the western Balkan Peninsula of Europe, which is also separated from Italy by the Adriatic Sea. Mr. Orucevic says that growing up in Bosnia was wonderful and amazing, also mentioning that he played soccer there. He worked in his home country up until 1996, when he moved away from Europe with his wife. When asked what his reasons for moving were, he said, “Careers; I was an engineer. We moved first to Canada, and then from Canada, we came here.” Mr. Orucevic had moved away in order to find new career opportunities, and eventually came to America to become a math teacher. “Half of my life I was in software. I was in software engineering, and then I switched to be a math teacher. My hands were tightened too much, so I became a math teacher,” he explains. He describes his experience living and working in America as having, “more free time, more fun, and less work,” compared to his life in Bosnia. Looking into his personal life, Mr. Orucevic says that he has a wife and one child: a son. His son is now 34 years old and working successfully as a mathematician. Mr. Orucevic also adds, referring to his son, that, “He does some software.” The old saying, “like father, like son” seems to fit their taste in careers well; how very sweet! Mr. Orucevic doesn’t seem to miss his homeland now that he’s in America. When we asked if he missed Bosnia, he immediately responded, “No, not at all.” He also mentions that Bosnian and American culture are similar, but as previously mentioned, America has more to offer him when it comes to lifestyle. Overall, Mr. Orucevic’s life has been a mash of different experiences, leaving him with some wonderful lasting memories whilst he creates new ones.

Mr. Orucevic’s class rests in its lone state.

Stage Tech Students Work as Unseen Artist

These Stage Tech students are painting a mural.

The stage tech students are very involved in musical theater, working hard to fabricate props and plans to use in this fall’s upcoming production, Meet Me in St. Louis. The students are working on some very specific projects right now, though it’s only the beginning of what they have to do throughout the rest of the semester. “We are working on a mural to hang outside the classroom to advertise the show, we’re analyzing the script, and we’re designing the sets. Right now we’re doing research to figure out what things looked like back then,” said Mr. Webb, the head teacher of the musical theater class. Many of the students are involved in the painting process, along with the rest of the work. They are working together as a team to get the big projects done. As for the “analyzing a script” aspect, some may wonder, “Why read the script when you aren’t the ones acting?” The students give a reason for this: “I think analyzing the text definitely gives you a feel for props, what you’re going to need,” said Emily, a sophomore in stage tech. The unseen artists study the play scripts in order to get in tune with the setting and help them decide what props to make. Without them, there wouldn’t be any props or decorations for the play. “They make things happen; they’re the backbone of everything. They’re the ladder that the actors get to stand on,” Mr. Webb adds. However, aside from the work aspect, the students also have a good social dynamic within the class. “Everybody becomes like family after we get to know each other for a long time,” Mr. Webb says. The stage tech students are working in unity for the good of the actors and the show.

Briana, a freshman in Stage Tech, holds up peace signs.
