Mr. Orucevic, a well-known Algebra 2 and Calculus teacher at Carter High School, was willing to share some information about his life in his home country with us. Mr. Orucevic grew up in Bosnia, a country located in the western Balkan Peninsula of Europe, which is also separated from Italy by the Adriatic Sea. Mr. Orucevic says that growing up in Bosnia was wonderful and amazing, also mentioning that he played soccer there. He worked in his home country up until 1996, when he moved away from Europe with his wife. When asked what his reasons for moving were, he said, “Careers; I was an engineer. We moved first to Canada, and then from Canada, we came here.” Mr. Orucevic had moved away in order to find new career opportunities, and eventually came to America to become a math teacher. “Half of my life I was in software. I was in software engineering, and then I switched to be a math teacher. My hands were tightened too much, so I became a math teacher,” he explains. He describes his experience living and working in America as having, “more free time, more fun, and less work,” compared to his life in Bosnia. Looking into his personal life, Mr. Orucevic says that he has a wife and one child: a son. His son is now 34 years old and working successfully as a mathematician. Mr. Orucevic also adds, referring to his son, that, “He does some software.” The old saying, “like father, like son” seems to fit their taste in careers well; how very sweet! Mr. Orucevic doesn’t seem to miss his homeland now that he’s in America. When we asked if he missed Bosnia, he immediately responded, “No, not at all.” He also mentions that Bosnian and American culture are similar, but as previously mentioned, America has more to offer him when it comes to lifestyle. Overall, Mr. Orucevic’s life has been a mash of different experiences, leaving him with some wonderful lasting memories whilst he creates new ones.
