Teachers spend a lot of time helping students learn, but there is more to them than what students see in the classroom. Many teachers have hobbies, interests, and activities that they do during their free time. One example is Ms. Shoemaker, who spends her time outside of school playing in an adult recreational soccer league.
Ms. Shoemaker has been playing soccer for most of her life. She explained that she played competitive soccer throughout her childhood which inspired her to continue playing the sport. She grew up loving, even after becoming a teacher she has continued to make time for soccer because it is something she truly enjoys and her favorite part about playing soccer is Ms. Shoemaker said that. “I just love everything about it. I love the competitive spirit, the camaraderie between teammates, the physical exertion, all of it.”She is continuing to enjoy her childhood sport and that has been important to her for years.
Ms. Shoemaker also plans to continue playing soccer for the foreseeable future. Although she knows that there may be eventually. Be a time she decides to stop. She explained that she enjoys it too much to give it up right now.
Students were also surprised to learn about her life outside of the classroom. Noah, a student in her fourth period class, said that he had no idea his teacher played soccer outside of school when asked about his reaction. He explained that he was surprised because he had never expected her to be interested in something like thatNoah also shared that he is a little surprised when he finds out his teacher has hobby outside of school. He explained that the students are mostly their teachers and they’re not always think about what they do in their free time.
Ms. Shoemaker’s love for soccer shows that teachers have an interest in passion outside of their jobs. Getting to know these different sides of teachers help students see them as more than just people standing in front of a classroom.
