Imagine leaving your home in Spain to start a whole new life in Tennessee where the school, culture, and everyday routines are different. Exchange student Yaiza Zayer Grande moved from Madrid, Spain to Knoxville, Tennessee to adjust to new experiences and learn about a different culture. Yaiza is a Junior, she is staying in Knoxville for 10 months and also attending Carter High School, during her time in Tennessee she is meeting a lot of new people and making friends. One of the biggest differences she has noticed between Spain and Knoxville is the food and the daily schedule. She said “ In Spain lunch is at 3pm and at 9-10pm is dinner instead of eating lunch at 12-2pm and eating dinner at 6-8pm in Knoxville”. Johana Turner, one of her friends, has gotten to know Yaiza while she has been living here. Johana said “ I learned about the time differences, all the cultures, and food. Being her friend is different from being other people’s friend. It is easier because she understands me more than other people because we both speak the same language.
