Why Guilty Gear Strive Is Fighting Game Of The Year

Game Review: Guilty Gear Strive

Guilty Gear has got to be one of the best fighting games I have played this year. The level of quality put into the game is insane. The visuals, music and story, to the mechanics itself shows how much love and effort was put into it. The series itself got its start during the 90’s by the lead developer Daisuke Ishiwatari within the company of Arc Systems. Guilty Gear Strive will be the conclusion of the series, more specifically the main character, Sol Badguy’s story. Sol Badguy within the story will be going toe to toe with the long time main villain That Man.

Guilty Gear’s music quality is outstanding. Daisuke Ishiwatari also created the music with the series, making it very clear that he is talented in both making music and games. Each track has an amazing amount of quality in it with a variety of instruments such as guitars, piano, and drums. The music goes for an American rock/metal theme and it just doesn’t miss. I’ve never been more hooked to a fighting game’s soundtrack than that of Guilty Gear Strive. Every single song in the game is incredibly memorable and can easily get stuck in your head. 

The gameplay is incredibly good. Each character from the base game roster of 15 characters all play entirely different from one another. None of them feel the same at all and it really helps enhance the experience of the game. Each character also has their own unique fighting style. The mechanics themselves enhance the gameplay even more with Roman Cancels and Burst. Roman Cancels allow you to cancel an attack to extend a combo. This can make some combos incredibly large. The burst mechanic allows you to build up your Tension which helps you pull off special attacks.  

The game’s visuals are outstanding. Sure you’ll hear that about most games but Guilty Gear is different. The game is done in 3D animation but made purposely to look 2D going as far as to even add purposeful animation flaws you would see in 2D animation. The amount of details put into how the game looks is awesome and it’s easily one of the best looking games of this year. 

Guilty Gear Strive is one of the best fighting games I’ve played but it does have a few complaints. The roster of available playable characters without DLC isn’t the largest. It’s also one of the more simpler Guilty Gear games, leaving combo potential to be not nearly as great as it was in the older games. Despite the game’s flaws I highly recommend this game as it is so much fun and it’s so addicting to land a huge combo.
