Op Ed: Pass Your Classes!

I’ve been a student at Carter High School for 4 years now, and I’ve been in that, “I don’t wanna do this work” kind of mood. I was in that mood for three years, all the way up until the summer before my senior year when I got an email from my guidance counselor about my credits. She told me that I needed to pass every single class this year with at least a C, or else I wouldn’t be able to graduate, and I’d have to take another year of high school. I’ve had to retake classes, spend countless hours on makeup work so I can pass, and if I can tell any underclassmen one thing; it would be that it is not worth it. Having to retake classes, I find myself in many classes with underclassmen, mostly Sophomores and Juniors. And almost every day I see kids not doing their work, and I just wish they knew how much trouble that’ll bring them, and how tough things will get if they continue to do that. I hope that someone that is in the situation I’ve described sees this, and it persuades them to fix it before it gets too hard. There’s a few things you can do to help your situation. What I found the most helpful was talking to my guidance counselor frequently. I didn’t realize it until this year, but they really care. They are willing to take so much time to help, and it really showed when I needed it. Another thing you can do is speak to your teachers, and possibly get copies of work you didn’t do well on, or do some extra credit assignments. Take my word for it, failing your classes simply is not worth it!
